Under the auspices of the President of Mongolia, the First International Forum of the Eurasian Museums will convene leaders from over 20 countries at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum in June 2026.
The Eurasian region is a vital hub of global cultural relations and exchange that has preserved and protected thousands of years of cultural heritage. Museums and cultural heritage institutions within the countries of this region have played a crucial role in the preservation, study, and public dissemination of humanity's tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The historical and cultural values of Mongolians are deeply intertwined with the role of Chinggis Khaan and the Mongol Empire in regional and world history, particularly the contribution of the Mongols to Eurasian history and their multifaceted cultural relations and scientific exchanges.
Under the auspices of the President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, The First International Forum of the Eurasian Museums entitled "The Eurasian Exchange: Future Gateways and Multilateral Cooperation" will be held at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum on June 15-20, 2026. The aim of the forum is to convene together about 20 countries and more than 40 leaders from preeminent museums and cultural institutions in the French Republic, Czech Republic, Swiss Confederation, Republic of Austria, Federal Republic of Germany, Hungary, Russia, Republic of Poland, Republic of Lithuania, Japan, Republic of Korea, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Hosting the First International Forum of the Eurasian Museums at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum will be a crucial step to expanding collaboration, exchanging experience between regional museums and defining future directions.
During the forum, leaders and experts will deliver presentations on 4 thematic areas including museum management, cultural heritage preservation and conservation, digital museum and innovation, and international cooperation and partnerships. Accordingly, the discussions will focus on highlighting the role of museums in contemporary society, the challenges they face and their development trend, as well as ways to intensify the contribution of the Eurasian museums.
On the other hand, the forum is expected to create great opportunities for shared understanding and to enhance regional joint initiatives in the areas of academic research, exhibitions, education, marketing, promotion and safeguarding.
This year, ICOM will commemorate the 80th ICOM anniversary, as museums around the world come together to celebrate International Museum Day under the theme "Museums Uniting a Divided World". The theme highlights the powerful role of museums in bridging cultural, social, and geopolitical divisions in today's world and fostering mutual understanding, inclusion, and strengthening peace within and between communities worldwide.
The theme, which focuses on supporting cooperation among museums in jointly overcoming global challenges, is closely aligned with the significance and concept of the First International Forum of the Eurasian Museums.
The Chinggis Khaan National Museum, by taking a leadership role in organizing the forum, is offering an amazing opportunity for delegates to visit new museums showcasing the history of nomads and to experience the Mongolian nomadic way of life, and the gathering of international museum professionals in one place will also open new avenues for deepening future cooperation. Furthermore, the museum aims to actively engage in collaboration among the Eurasian museums and to create a sustainable platform for the exchange of experience.
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has officially marked an event entitled "The First International Forum of the Eurasian Museums" to be held in Mongolia, and published it in the "Events – Calendar" section of its official website.
